Considering an IUD Insertion?
If you are considering an IUD insertion with Dr. Leisha, your first step is to schedule a standard consultation. During this appointment, Dr. Leisha will:
Take a detailed history, including your menstrual and gynaecological history, to ensure the IUD is an appropriate contraceptive choice for you.
Discuss the available IUD options, including the Mirena, Kyleena, and Copper IUD, to help determine the best choice for you.
Explain the procedure in detail, including potential risks and complications.
Provide a script for your chosen device.
Please note that insertion appointments cannot be booked online and will be scheduled by our practice staff after your consultation.
The Insertion Procedure
The IUD insertion is performed during a standard 30-minute appointment, with the practice nurse present to assist as needed. Dr. Leisha ensures the procedure is carried out with professionalism and care, prioritising your comfort and safety.
You are welcome to bring a support person with you to the appointment to ensure you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.
Preparing for the Procedure
To ensure a smooth and safe procedure, please follow these preparation guidelines:
Contraception: Continue to use your current method of contraception as directed until the IUD is inserted. If you have had unprotected intercourse in the three weeks prior to the insertion, a urine pregnancy test may be required on the day to rule out early pregnancy.
Replacing an IUD: If you are replacing your IUD, please use condoms or abstain from intercourse for seven days prior to your insertion appointment. This precaution helps protect against pregnancy in case the new IUD cannot be inserted.
Pain Relief: Take two Naprogesic tablets (or other pain relief as discussed with Dr. Leisha) 30–60 minutes before your insertion appointment to help minimize discomfort.
Emergency Contact and Driving: Occasionally, the IUD insertion can cause a fainting episode during or shortly after the procedure. For this reason, you are advised not to drive a motor vehicle for one hour after the procedure. Additionally, we will request an emergency contact and their details for use in case of an emergency.
Follow-Up and Additional Considerations
Ultrasound: In some cases, it may be necessary to have an ultrasound after the insertion to confirm the IUD’s position.
Follow-Up Appointment: Dr. Leisha recommends attending a follow-up appointment 2–3 weeks after your IUD insertion to ensure everything is progressing as expected.
Nothing Vaginally for 48 Hours: For optimal healing, it is recommended to avoid inserting anything vaginally, including sex, tampons, baths, or swimming, for 48 hours following the insertion procedure.
Technical Limitations: Occasionally, it may not be technically possible to insert the IUD. In such cases, Dr. Leisha can provide a referral to a medical service where the procedure can be performed under a light general anesthetic (sedation).
Dr. Leisha and her team are committed to ensuring you feel informed, prepared, and supported throughout your IUD journey
